In a move that has ignited fierce backlash from Big Blue Nation, longtime ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale has placed Kentucky noticeably lower than expected in his 2025 preseason rankings — and fans are not taking it lightly.
Vitale, known for his passionate takes and decades-long presence in the sport, released his annual rankings this week, and the Wildcats were nowhere near the Top 5. In fact, Vitale ranked Kentucky *outside the Top 10* — a placement that many fans are calling “disrespectful” and “clueless.”
Social media quickly exploded with reactions. Kentucky faithful accused Vitale of bias, with some even questioning whether he’s been keeping up with the Wildcats’ highly touted recruiting class, including multiple 5-star signees and returning veterans. Others expressed shock at what they see as a snub from a man who once praised the Kentucky program as one of the sport’s cornerstones.
> “No way you leave Kentucky that low unless you’re trying to stir the pot,” one fan tweeted.
> “Vitale’s lost it. We’re coming for a title this year,” said another.
Vitale defended his pick in a follow-up post, citing concerns over the team’s lack of proven experience and coaching consistency in high-pressure moments. “I love Kentucky, but talent alone doesn’t win titles,” he said. “Let’s see how they gel before handing them a crown.”
Still, the damage may already be done. Kentucky’s passionate fan base has long been known to rally behind perceived slights — and this one may be all the motivation the Wildcats need as they head into a make-or-break season.
With tip-off just months away, all eyes will be on Kentucky to prove Dickie V — and the doubters — dead wrong.
