Why Aubameyang got angry after being sub off for Chelsea against Man City
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s decline has to be one of the saddest things in football so far in 2023.
The Chelsea striker has fallen off the paces, looking like a shadow of his former self under Graham Potter. He started the game vs Manchester City on January 5th on the bench but was called into action early after Raheem Sterling picked up an injury in the 5th minute.
The Gabonese striker failed to impact the game with Kai Havertz looking like the potential threat to Manchester City’s backline. After Riyad Mahrez put City ahead, Potter withdrew Aubameyang and threw on teenager Omari-Giraud Hutchinson.
To put it into context, Chelsea was in dire need of a goal, but Potter took off his lead striker with vast experience and threw on a player who before that game, did not have Premier League experience to face the reigning champions. Plus, Aubameyang was a sub who was subbed off.
Understandably, as Daily Star reports, the 33-year-old trotted off the pitch visibly upset. He barely acknowledged Potter as he made his way to the bench. Aubameyang made a comeback to the Premier League barely six months after leaving. He had fallen out with Mikel Arteta at Arsenal before moving to Barcelona. He rediscovered his form in Spain and became an instant success.
