Why Frank Lampard is considered as one of the most hated Chelsea players.

Frank Lampard is a Chelsea legend having made 648 appearances and breaking Bobby Tambling’s all-time goalscoring record by netting 211 times for the Blues. He has recently left the club and joined New York City but will always be fondly remembered on the terraces at Stamford Bridge. Not so when it comes to rival fans. Lampard has faced some fans’ scorn over a series of controversies that include appearing in a sex tape with Kieron Dyer and Rio Ferdinand in 2000 and abusing grieving American tourists in the wake of the 2001 September 11 terrorist attacks.

During an incident on September 12, Lampard and three teammates stripped, swore and vomited in front of American travellers who had been stranded at London’s Heathrow airport after their flight back home had been cancelled due to the attacks on the twin towers and the Pentagon. US media have been recirculating the story over the last seven days with Lampard joining New York City, and he is bound to receive something of an icy reception from some fans as he prepares to settle down and make a new life for himself in the States.

In January last year, Eden Hazard was embroiled in a scandal that would later become known as ‘ballboy gate’ following Chelsea’s 2-0 aggregate defeat to Swansea in the League Cup semi-finals. With the clock ticking down on his side’s hopes of reaching the Wembley final and going into the last 10 minutes of the game, Hazard ran to collect a stray ball after referee Chris Foy had given a goal kick in a bid to quickly get the game back underway.

Swansea ballboy Charlie Morgan had other ideas and casually trotted over to the ball to return it to the goalkeeper himself. Morgan fell on top of the ball and the red mist came down as Hazard lashed out, complaining that the youngster was time wasting and kicking him in the ribs. Foy handed Hazard a straight red card for his blatant assault and the midfielder served a three match ban, while South Wales police opened an investigation into the incident, though Morgan refused to press charges. Now, whenever Chelsea face Swansea, Hazard is always booed and jeered by the Welsh club’s fans.

7. Most hated Chelsea players: David Luiz

Most hated Chelsea players: David Luiz

Why David Luiz is considered as one of the most hated Chelsea players.

David Luiz evoked the fury of Manchester United fans and manager Sir Alex Ferguson alike in May last year during a typically combustible clash between Chelsea and United that ended up in a 1-0 win for the Blues and a harsh red card for Red Devils defender Rafael. During a tussle between Luiz and Rafael near the corner flag, Luiz could be seen throwing out an elbow at his compatriot as the right-back attempted to win the ball.

Rafael lost his temper and came in hard on Luiz, who promptly threw himself to ground and, in Ferguson’s own words, rolled around €œlike a dying swan€. Worse still, the Chelsea defender was smirking the whole time, feigning injury while glancing over at the referee from time to time to see if he had gotten Rafael sent off. He had. Luiz was promptly hammered by the press in the wake of the scandal, with many calling his behaviour disgraceful and unsporting. Known for his hot-headed attitude and mocked for his “Sideshow Bob” haircut, Luiz is another former Chelsea star who won’t be winning any popularity contests any time soon.

Leaving a team where you’re adored in favour of a move to a direct Premier League rival is a shortcut to ensuring you’re hated and reviled in certain places and that’s what Fernando Torres did when he ditched Liverpool to join Chelsea for a British transfer record £50 million in 2011. After Liverpool rejected a £40 million bid for the Spaniard, Torres took matters into his own hands and handed in a transfer request to force through the move, immediately alienating himself from the Kop.

Astonishment soon turned to fury when the move eventually went through, and the striker was immediately branded a traitor. In a recent interview, Torres spoke of his controversial move from Liverpool to London in which he cryptically blamed his former side for the way things unfolded, and insisted he didn’t know why he was hated so much on Merseyside. He said: “I have nothing against the Liverpool fans.

“I didn’t want to leave Liverpool the way I did but the club lied. I was let down and I don’t understand why the fans hate me.”

Perhaps some of that hate has softened somewhat in recent years with Liverpool signing a new idol – briefly – in the form of Luis Suarez while Torres has flopped for the Blues. He is today mocked and laughed at rather than reviled for a succession of blunders in front of goal and a dismal goals return that included only five in the league last season.

5. Most hated Chelsea players: Arjen Robben

Most hated Chelsea players: Arjen Robben

Why Arjen Robben is considered as one of the most hated Chelsea players.

In spite of a successful World Cup campaign for the Netherlands, Arjen Robben has come in for some bad press recently over his tendency to throw himself to ground just a little bit too easily. He admitted diving to win his side a penalty in the dramatic win against Mexico recently, drawing the ire of fans in some quarters, and that isn’t the first time.

During his playing days with Chelsea, between 2004-07, the Dutchman was involved in a clash with Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina. Reina moved his hand toward Robben’s face after some provocative words from the winger, who promptly took to ground like a sack of spuds. With the referee conned, Reina received a straight red card for “violent behaviour”.

Reina later commented that Robben “did well enough to win an Oscar” for his theatrics while Liverpool manager at the time Rafael Benítez joked in a post-match interview that he “would soon be going to hospital to check on Robben’s condition”. A talented player, yes, but his track record for diving and cheating make Robben very hard to love.
