Report: Chelsea star told he can leave this summer after claims he’s been offered to Tottenham

Graham Potter explains why Edouard Mendy will not play against Salzburg in first game in charge of Chelsea

Chelsea are ready to sell goalkeeper Edouard Mendy amid claims he has been offered to Tottenham Hotspur this season.

That’s according to The Sunday Mirror, who claim that Chelsea have now told Mendy he can leave this summer.

The Senegal stopper is inside the final 18 months of his contract and there has been no movement on a new deal.

Kepa Arrizabalaga has become Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper under Graham Potter, leaving Mendy in the shadows.

The 31-year-old has started just eight Premier League games this season and hasn’t played at all for Chelsea since the end of the World Cup.

The writing has been on the wall for Mendy for a while now and it looks like a summer departure will take place.

TOTTENHAM HAVE A CHANCE TO LAND EDOUARD MENDY

It’s unclear just who will be targeting Mendy this summer.

A return to France may appeal to Mendy whilst teams in Italy have been credited with an interest.

One of the more surprising rumours emerged in November as 90Min reported that Mendy had been offered to Tottenham Hotspur.

This was likely by Mendy’s agents or intermediaries, rather than by Chelsea themselves.

Tottenham may well target a new goalkeeper this summer with Hugo Lloris now 36 and guilty of a few errors this season.

Mendy may well appeal if he’s cheap enough but we think Tottenham will look elsewhere.

Younger stoppers like Dean Henderson and Giorgi Mamardashvili have been linked with Spurs of late and seem to fit the bill for what Spurs want – a promising goalkeeper who can grow into their first-team goalkeeper.

Mendy doesn’t really fit the bill as an heir for Lloris and his struggles with the ball at his feet mean Tottenham will likely go in another direction.
