Chelsea reportedly want to sign Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries in the January transfer window, with Newcastle United and Tottenham also chasing the Netherlands international.
According to CalcioMercato, the west London side intend to make a move for the 26-year-old wingback as soon as the market is once again open for business, with new manager Graham Potter keen to make a statement signing in defence to bolster Chelsea’s ranks at the bank.
Dumfries was linked with a move in the summer with Newcastle, Manchester United and Tottenham all reportedly chasing the former PSV Eindhoven star, with Chelsea also in the mix. However, the defender remained at Inter, though signs now point to the fullback leaving the San Siro in January.
The Dutchman only signed for Inter last year, though Dumfries already looks set to leave the Italian giants for the Premier League, with Chelsea now in the lead to land the defender, who had a reported price tag of £34m in the summer transfer window.
Chelsea will have a sensational wingback pairing if they sign Dumfries
Dumfries caught a lot of attention in last year’s Euros with his sensational and dynamic performances for the Netherlands, and Chelsea could do with a player like this out on the right, allowing Reece James to play in another position that fits the England international’s needs.
With Marc Cucrella likely to play out on the left, signing Dumfries will give Chelsea quite the wingback pairing, with the duo having the physicality and technical ability to really cause some damage in the Premier League under Potter in 2023.
