Chelsea set to beat Tottenham to signing of €40m-rated Uruguayan star

Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez. The 27-year-old is regarded as one of the best centre-backs in La Liga for a while now.

Chelsea may have signed Wesley Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly, but Fofana is currently out with a long-term injury, the Blues are looking to strengthen their defense after looking Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen to free transfers in the summer.

Thiago Silva is not getting any younger, and Cesar Azpilicueta is not at the top of his game anymore. Koulibaly has not been consistent so far this season.

Graham Potter will need to resolve the Blues defensive problems soon if they are make top four this season. It remains to be seen if Todd Boehly will back the Englishman in transfer market in the upcoming window.

Jose Gimenez is in the prime of his career at the moment and will be a significant addition to the defensive department. The Uruguay international could partner Chalobah and Fofana at the heart of the Chelsea’s defense in the coming years.
