Chelsea have made 'approach' to sign £33m star at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea have made an approach for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, Fabrizio Romano has informed GiveMeSport.

While a deal looks difficult, Romano says the Blues have spoken to the player’s agents and his club about a move to Stamford Bridge this month.

Chelsea transfer news – Amadou Onana

According to multiple outlets, including The Telegraph, Onana has rejected a proposal from Chelsea.

However, the newspaper has also stated that people close to the 21-year-old have not completely ruled out a transfer yet, so this may not be the end of it.

Chelsea’s move for Onana comes after their failed pursuit of Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo.

As per The Athletic, the west London club recently had a £55m bid for the Ecuador star rejected, resulting in them having to look at other options like Onana.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Amadou Onana and Chelsea?

Romano has told GMS that Chelsea have definitely spoken to Onana’s people and Everton about a transfer.

On their interest in the former Lille man, the Italian journalist said: “He’s on the radar of many clubs because, for example, Chelsea had conversations with his agents. They also approached Everton to understand the conditions of the deal for Onana.”

Why do Chelsea want Amadou Onana?

As already mentioned, they have not been able to sign Caicedo, while Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez also remains out of reach at this moment in time.

When asked if Fernandez will still be a Benfica player after the transfer window amid Chelsea’s interest, his manager Roger Schmidt told reporters (via Evening Standard): “Yes, of course. When you see Enzo playing for Benfica, you can tell he’s in shape and happy. He’s not thinking about anything else.

“I’m not expecting to lose any of our regular starters. I see the players concentrated and I hope this continues.”

Onana is not as high profile as someone like Fernandez, while Caicedo has a bit more Premier League experience than him. However, the 6 ft 4 Belgium international has impressed at Everton since arriving from Lille in a £33m deal last summer, as reported by BBC Sport.

According to WhoScored, he is making 2.6 tackles per game this season, which is the third-highest average in the Toffees’ squad.

Ultimately, based on how Onana has performed in the current campaign, you can see why Chelsea and Graham Potter have turned to him. A move to west London this month, however, looks unlikely.
