4 players who could leave Chelsea this January
Chelsea manager Graham Potter will have the option to reshape the Blues squad in the January transfer window, but who will be judged unnecessary?
Resolutions, transformations, and fresh starts are all encouraged in January, and Chelsea appears ready to embrace this idea as they usher in the new year.
As the fat is cut from a bloated team and new owner Todd Boehly continues to squander his riches with a brazen disregard for what others may think, the month might usher in the first stage of a squad overall at Chelsea in 2023.
Graham Potter, the manager, had the exceptional chance to work closely with those team members who were absent from the World Cup for a long length of time in the weeks before the window, away from the spotlight and media attention.
He should now be well aware of who and what he needs to add to his squad, as well as who is no longer necessary.
The four players listed by Chelsea Lens who might leave Stamford Bridge in January are as follows:
Edouard Mendy
It would have been unthinkable a few months ago for Mendy’s name to be on this list.
When Potter took over, the goalie was injured and out of shape, and he has suffered as a result. In his absence, Potter resorted to Kepa Arrizabalaga, and has supported the Spaniard ever since when selecting his strongest starting lineup, relegating Mendy to a supporting position.
Milan has been mentioned as a potential short-term destination for the Champions League and AFCON winner as they look for cover for injured Mike Maignan. However, the winner of both competitions is unlikely to accept playing second fiddle.
Hakim Ziyech
Ziyech put himself front and center of the shop window as he made history with Morocco in Qatar, despite the fact that his impact diminished as the competition went on.
The wide man has been consistently linked with AC Milan after switching from Ajax to west London in 2020. His languid style would fit the league’s slower tempo.
Graham Potter would have been reminded of Ziyech’s abilities by his World Cup displays, and a memorable cameo against Nottingham Forest on New Year’s Day may have cemented his place in the team.
Christian Pulisic
Before the World Cup, Pulisic’s manager used him little, but after a successful performance with the United States in Qatar, Graham Potter has begun to utilize him more frequently.
However, ambitious Pulisic has hinted that he is ready to seek a move elsewhere in order to secure regular game time if this stint with the squad ends abruptly like so many others before it.
The American remarked in a speech in December: “I am without a doubt back at Chelsea right now. centered and prepared to complete the season. But you are aware of how football operations operate. Everything is unpredictable and changes swiftly.”
Cesare Casadei
Casadei’s summer arrival is evidence that Chelsea is bringing in and fostering a talented group of young players, with new owner Todd Boehly determined to create a legion of Under-25 talent.
But that also means that it will be harder than ever to succeed.
Goal-scoring midfielder Casadei has made an immediate impact with the development team since moving from Inter. He was also invited to the mid-season training camp in Abu Dhabi and stood out on his first-team debut there against Aston Villa.
The 19-year-old has reportedly already been designated for a loan spell in January, likely with the goal of accelerating his development and getting him ready for the first squad as soon as possible.
