Why Chelsea Might Have to Pay the Full €84m for Latest Wonderkid Target After UCL Debut

Although we’re currently in the quiet period between transfer windows, Chelsea continues to be linked with emerging young talents, and the latest name on the list is Geovany Quenda from Sporting Club de Portugal.

According to Graeme Bailey of HITC, Chelsea is one of several top clubs, including Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham, showing interest in the 17-year-old. Despite only having 7 first-team appearances so far, Quenda has already caught the eye in Portugal for his impressive potential.

Sporting are in a strong position, having won the Portuguese league title last year, with their primary rivals trailing behind. Under the continued leadership of Ruben Amorim, they are not under any pressure to sell their top talents. Additionally, Sporting boasts a €100m asset in Viktor Gyokeres, who is likely to be sold next summer, bringing in substantial funds.

With a significant cash influx expected from Gyokeres’ potential sale, Sporting is in no rush to part ways with Quenda. It’s likely that the youngster will stay for another year or 18 months before making a move. His €84m release clause could very well be triggered if he continues his rapid development.

For Quenda, staying at Sporting provides him with the opportunity to continue his growth and get regular game time, whereas a move to a club like Chelsea or other top teams might see him lost in the shuffle of talent, without the same chances to develop. Therefore, he may be in no rush to leave the club, knowing he has a secure path to regular minutes and experience.
