Three of Liverpool’s key players—Mo Salah, Virgil Van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold—are all entering the final months of their contracts. While negotiations with Salah and Van Dijk seem to be progressing well, there are growing rumors suggesting that Alexander-Arnold may be seeking a new challenge. Real Madrid is one club heavily linked with the talented right-back.
This raises an interesting question: could Chelsea be involved? According to Simon Phillips, if Trent leaves Liverpool, the club may target a player currently at Stamford Bridge—Malo Gusto. The French right-back has had a mixed spell at Chelsea since joining 18 months ago. He initially impressed but has recently struggled for form. Interestingly, Gusto appeared to thrive more under Mauricio Pochettino than under current manager Enzo Maresca.
Phillips reports that both Liverpool and Manchester City are interested in Gusto, but Chelsea have no intention of letting him go. The club is focused on helping him improve, particularly his attacking contributions, rather than selling him.
Chelsea’s priority at the moment is to strengthen the squad, and they are reportedly looking for a right-back to help share the load with Gusto, rather than replacing him.
While this rumor has come out of nowhere, it’s one to watch as the January transfer window opens. Chelsea’s plans may become clearer in the coming weeks, especially if there is movement in the pursuit of defensive reinforcements.
