Chelsea may see Romeo Lavia return to action against Crystal Palace today, but manager Enzo Maresca has also shared some troubling updates on the team’s defensive injuries.
Lavia, who has been sidelined for four Premier League matches with a hamstring issue, could provide a much-needed boost to Chelsea’s midfield. His absence coincided with a noticeable dip in the team’s form during the festive season. Speaking ahead of the match, Maresca offered some optimism:
“Romeo is very close; he’s started working with us,” Maresca said. “We all know Romeo is a top player, but the key for him is staying fit. There’s no doubt about his quality; we just need to figure out how to keep him from getting injured again.”
However, the good news on Lavia is overshadowed by a major blow to Chelsea’s defense. Wesley Fofana is facing a prolonged absence due to a serious hamstring injury that could potentially rule him out for the rest of the season. Additionally, Benoit Badiashile is not expected to return until at least next month.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall remains sidelined with an injury, but Chelsea has been handed a boost with the availability of captain Reece James. The defender made his return to the squad earlier this week, featuring as an unused substitute during the 2-0 defeat against Ipswich.
