Chelsea eye Marc Guehi return, but tricky transfer clause poses a challenge

Chelsea is reportedly considering a stunning move to bring England defender Marc Guehi back to Stamford Bridge.

Crystal Palace valued the center-back at £70 million last summer, which scuppered Newcastle’s attempts to sign him. However, Chelsea could be motivated to reacquire the player they sold to Palace for £18 million in 2021, particularly as they face a growing defensive injury crisis. Wesley Fofana’s potential season-ending injury has left the Blues in urgent need of reinforcements at the back.

Chelsea remains highly impressed with Guehi, having included a clause in his transfer deal that allows them to match any offers from other clubs. Additionally, the agreement features a sell-on clause of up to 20%, though this would be more complex if Chelsea themselves are the buyers.

Newcastle is still interested in Guehi, while Liverpool, heavily linked with him last summer, ultimately decided against a move for the England international. Guehi’s current contract at Palace has just 18 months remaining, which could influence his transfer value and potentially make a deal more feasible.

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish was adamant last summer that the club did not need to sell and refused to lower their valuation. However, with Guehi’s contract winding down and several top clubs showing interest, Palace might face a tougher decision this time.

Despite this, it seems unlikely that Palace would part ways with Guehi during the January transfer window. Chelsea, therefore, may have to wait until the summer to make their move.

Since his performances at last summer’s Euros, Guehi’s reputation has soared. His composure, leadership qualities, and ability on the ball have made him one of the most sought-after defenders in the Premier League.

While Chelsea’s potential interest gives them a slight advantage, reacquiring a player they sold at a significantly higher price could spark debates about the club’s long-term transfer strategy. Nonetheless, there will be no shortage of suitors if Guehi becomes available.
